The Unwanted Guests at Your Backyard BBQ: Mosquitoes

G

Here are some tips to keep unwanted guests from ruining your backyard BBQ: Mosquitoes!

Plant lemongrass

Lemongrass plants can be found at your local Asian market or grocery store – make sure to purchase a mature plant. Trim the tops, plant in a clear jar of water and place on a sunny windowsill. Once roots have developed the plant can be transplanted to your garden.

Reuse wine bottles

  • 1 empty and cleaned wine bottle
  • 1 Tiki Torch wick refill (thick)
  • Tiki Torch citronella lamp oil
  • 3/8″ diameter metal washer (or adjust for size of opening)

Feed the wick through the opening of the washer, leaving about a 1/4-inch of the wick sticking out of the top for a snug fit. Make sure there aren’t any gaps between the washer and the wick, which may cause the bottle to fill up with smoke.

Pour the oil into the bottle with enough to cover half of the wick. Feed the longer side of wick into the bottle. Light the top wick and enjoy!

Prevent

Did you know that mosquitoes actually begin their lives under water? To prevent, keep your rain gutters clear and your unused bird baths empty to reduce their breeding grounds. Also, consider installing a drip can under your rain barrel.
